Nutrition Education Available for Caritas Clients
Written by Administrator

Caritas has begun a new initiative to help educate its clients regarding the importance of a nutritional diet that includes fresh vegetables and fruits.

This effort comes in conjunction with a $50,000 grant from the Beaumont Foundation that is used to provide nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables for families receiving food assistance from Caritas.

The agency has begun working with several organizations such as Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Heart of Texas Community Health Center, Waco McLennan County Public Health District, and Heart of Texas Urban Gardening Coalition to assist in providing nutrition and related education.

“We are excited that Caritas clients will benefit from various topics such as cooking lessons; eating for good health; understanding the food pyramid; developing gardening skills; stretching food dollars; incorporating exercise with good nutrition (food models), balanced diet; learning about weight and obesity, di- etary supplements, food labels and carbohydrates counting,” said Buddy Edwards, Caritas Executive Director.

“I am pleased to be able to promote healthy lifestyles and improve quality of life through this partnership with Caritas,” added Crystal Smedley, Health Services Coordinator/Health Educator, Waco-McLennan County Public Health District.

The presentations offer Caritas clients a meaningful use of their time while they are waiting for services. Caritas is looking for other organizations that may be able to give presentations on topics of importance to clients.
